UNDERSTANDING
DYSLEXIA
INTERVENTIONS
1
Computers
Computers can be useful to dyslexics because touch typing skills are learned. The computers also have spell checking programs, which are useful in the spelling department because dyslexics have poor spelling.
4
Graphic Organizers
Encourage the use of graphic organizers. It involves organizing material into a visual format. To develop it, the student can list the topic on the first line, collect and divide information into major headings, list all information relating to major headings on index cards, organize information into major areas, place information under appropriate subheadings, and place information into the organizer format.
2
Tape Recorders
Tape recorders can be useful in classes and lectures because note taking skills can be a problem for dyslexic individuals. It is useful for a child to record his or her ideas which can then be transcribed later. Also, to improve reading skills, the student can read the printed words silently as they are presented on tape.
5
Speech Recognition Devices
The speech devices are especially useful because the individual can talk into a microphone and see his or her words appear on screen. This helps with the spelling and how the word is pronounced.
3
Mnemonic Device
Mnemonic devices can be used to help students remember key information or steps in a learning strategy. An example of mnemonic instruction is using the word HOMES to remember the names of the Great Lakes.
