STEVEN SPIELBERG

Steven Spielberg was born on December 18 1947 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was the oldest and only son of four children. His father, Arnold Spielberg, worked as an electrical engineer and his mother, Leah Adler Posner, was a concert pianist. He grew up as an Orthodox Jew and attended an 'Hebrew School' from 1953 to 1957. There he experienced prejudice and bullying due to his family's religious practices. Due to his father's job, the Spielberg's moved around a lot. They moved to New Jersey, Phoenix, Arizona and "Silicon Valley" near San Jose, California.

 

As a child, Spielberg began directing his first short film. In 1958, he received a photography merit badge as a Boy Scout for creating a 9 minute film called "The Last Gunfight."

At the age of 13, Spielberg made another film "Escape to Nowhere" a film based on a battle in east Africa, for which he won a prize. In 1963, he wrote and directed his first independent film, called "Firelight." Spielberg attended 'California State University Long Beach' but dropped out to pursue his career in the entertainment center.

 

Spielberg says film making helps him express himself,he also states: 'I never felt like a victim. Movies really helped me... kind of saved me from shame, from guilt. Making movies was my great escape.' Spielberg is most known for the very popular movies that he produced. Examples of those movies are: Jaws, E.T, Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, the Indiana Jones series, War Horse, The Color Purple and many more.
